A Giant Disappointment
The New York Giants are now 0-3 to start the 2017 season and things don't look too promising in the weeks to come. The Giants have always been a little bit schizophrenic in the past. They started 0-2 in 2007 and went on to win the Super Bowl, in 2009 the Giants started 5-0 and then went on to finish the season 8-8 and in 2013 they began the year 0-6 before winning 5 of 6 and missed the playoffs. The strangest thing about the Giants organization over the last 10 years is the absolute unpredictability of how they will play week to week and year to year. The talent has stayed at a relatively high level but there are real concerns about the 2017 team which do not give Giants fans much hope moving forward. The defense is the obvious strength of this team and has not disappointed as they are the number 2 ranked defense in the league after 3 weeks. The problems with this team rest on the shoulders of Eli Manning and the offensive line woes which have plagued the team over the last 3 years.
The Giants have attempted to address the offensive line in the draft but have missed the mark on LT Ereck Flowers and RT Bobby Hart has not been much better. Eli Manning has obviously been pressured a great deal but critics and fans alike are done making excuses for Manning who has not played consistently well since the Super Bowl run of 2011.
The story this week will undoubtedly be how the Giants fought back and scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to put themselves in position to beat the Eagles. It seems that the passing game finally resembled what we thought it could be before the season began a few weeks ago. It's hard to say that a week 4 game is a must win but it sure feels like it as the Giants have the Bucs, Chargers. Broncos and Seahawks over the next 4 weeks.
With no improvements coming to the offensive line or running game the Giants only hope is that the 4th quarter success in the passing game from week 3 carries over. Maybe the schizophrenic nature of this organization will allow for another turnaround but the winning needs to start soon.
