NFL Week 5/ NFL Picks

October 8, 2017

Chiefs

They’re 4-0, they’re dynamic: they have to win the the title this year.  Many fan bases know what it’s like to lose in the playoffs.  The Chiefs have had several big-time teams and hall-of-fame players, but with that being said they have always found a way to blow it in the playoffs.  Andy Reid has the members of Chiefs Kingdom on fire.

These Chiefs are built around three terrific young players: CB Marcus Peters, RB Kareem Hunt, and WR Tyreek Hill.  All explosive, all special, and all can be game changing players.  The Chiefs will battle their opponents, but they will also be battling their own team history; they haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1970, so lets just say it’s been awhile.  As the Chiefs battle playoff demons, so does coach Reid; his career is filled with every accomplishment a Head Coach could have — with the exception of a Super Bowl title.  So can the coach who can’t get to the mountain top and the team who can’t get there either will do it together this year.  They have the team to do it, and the AFC is subpar, so the time is now for the Chiefs to make the Super Bowl their kingdom.

Bills

No matter what defensive stat you look, at the Buffalo Bills are at the top of the heap.   First-year coach Sean Mcdermott has the Bills playing well.  They are doing it with a simple approach: playing D and running the football.  Buffalo has impressive wins at Atlanta and home vs Denver.

But Sunday will be a big test: can they win the game they’re supposed to win?  The Bills are on the road vs the Bengals, so this will be their biggest test.  They won’t be able to sneak up on anybody anymore — they have the league’s attention, so lets see how they react in this position as favorite instead of underdog.

Buc’s

This team is a mess.  Yes I know this isn’t a popular feeling around the league, but let me tell you why: Winston isn’t growing as a QB, he is wild and erratic just like the Tampa Bay offense.  One week they are driving for a game winning drive vs the Giants, the next game they can’t move it vs the worst defensive team in the league: the New England Patriots.

The Bucs scored only 14 points in a 16-14 loss.  The Bucs’ brass didn’t want to lose Dirk Koetter — who was the OC under Lovie Smith.  When it looked like they might love him in a kind of panic move, they made him the Head Coach.  Some coaches are just better as coordinators — like Wade Phillips and Norv Turner.  Koetter has Desean Jackson (who is hard to deal with) and OJ Howard (who is struggling in all aspects as a tight end).  Plus, in a league where teams pass first, they have a horrible secondary.  Did I mention their kicking game — where Nick Folk is missing kick after kick?  Talent can only take you so far; they need someone to lead them.  Captain Dirk isn’t the man to do so.

Rams

When you have a young coach, you want see excitement and buy-in from the players.  Sean McVay has the Rams in first place with the league’s most explosive and highest-scoring unit after four games.  The NFC West has been ruled by the Seattle Seahawks for years; if the Rams are going to take this division from them, it will have to start Sunday in the LA Coliseum.

The Rams are getting great play from Jared Goff and ‘Mr. Everything’ running back Todd Gurley.  They’re struggling, however, to learn Wade Phillips’ defense and are getting gashed in the running game.  But once they get that defense, the Rams could be a playoff team.  Look for the Rams to force the issue with their defensive line and try to get pressure on Seahawks QB Russell Wilson; Seattle has had a hard time protecting their QB and getting a running game going.  This is the biggest game in the Jared Goff era, so let’s see if he and the ‘Greatest Show on Surf’ offense can beat the legion on boom.
